Sinds juli 2019 geldt Gera, in de deelstaat Th\u00fcringen, als een modelstad voor slimme steden in Duitsland. Destijds dienden meer dan 100 gemeenten uit het hele land een aanvraag in bij het Ministerie van Binnenlandse Zaken, Bouw en Binnenlandse Zaken.
